Red Dawn

Remember this? Its a movie poster, from a controversial movie that made its debut in the 80's during the Reagan Administration in the United States..."Red Dawn". Red Dawn was controversial because it was a movie about a Russian military invasion in the United States. The Communists in Russians got bored and decided, "be done with it" and invaded the U.S. Leaving , U.S citizens to fight the dirty commies.

This movie starred Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. The movie never did gain much popularity at the theaters, as it seemed a bit improbable the the Russians would actually invade the U.S. It was a bit of hysteria cooked up during the Reagan administration, as things like a Missile defense system in space was gaining popularity in that administration and in the United States.

During the time of all this controversy, I kind of balked at it the introduction of this movie, Why portrait the Russians this way? Are they acually stupid enough to physically invade this Country? The good question to ask then was "How will communism manifest in the country if it every "took" hold here? All you have to do is look around in the U.S today to realize that the old ideas in American culture have changed, the things Americans feared in the 50's,60's up until today have taked place. Have we lost to a sort of Red Dawn in this nation, not with a fight or a bang, but with a whimper..?

Today America is faced with record numbers of people out of the job market, people living on the streets, the loss of manufacuring jobs as employers move jobs out of the U.S, increases in crime, and an upsurging of criminal organizations, increases in the size of government, but the increases are related to external and internal security surveillance on its citizens and maintaining a secret government.

Today maybe the word "Communism" has been replace by the word "Terrorism". Today the word" Communism" just doesn't evoke fear as it would have in the 50's in the U.S.

The United States might be in real economic problems and this might be the source of troubles today. As budget crunch gets tighter, the "deficit" gets larger. Around 2030 it was projected that payment on the "deficit" would take up 1/3 of America budget, causing cuts in vital services like social security....probably a lot of other services that Americans relie on like the Police, firefighters, public education. I see this everyday as all politicians talk about is closing down public schools and under the "No Child left behind" act in the United States, military reruitment is up in Public schools, and I have to dodge gangs of well financed drug gangs that have evil intentions on my life, and affect the lives of people I care about.

I think because of the way the current Bush administration and Congress is handling the Budget, they are going to expedite the time when a budget crunch, forces the closure or severe cutbacks in public services.

How might the U.S look like under a situation like this? One Economist said in the eighties that, "Were in danger of becoming a first rate military power, but a third rate economic one." A cryptic prediction made plain if you look at the United States today, its spells "Police State". Its what happens when you got the muscle, the weapons and the technology but no money!

I wasn't intending on commenting on the Iraq war under the "W.Bush" administration, but this poster, "Red Dawn ", is a bit ironic in the caption down below it. Its ironic that the Russian communist never invaded the United States with Weapons of war. But these days, it's the United States that is the invader in places like Iraq and such. We are fighting in Iraq trying to stop terrorism, as it is said, but what for the people living in Iraq? They might be insurgents and terrorist as we call them, but to the people living there might they be called freedom fighters, just as Americans would if we were fighting a invasion of "communist" in the United States as pictured in this movie "Red Dawn"?

WOW!

Yes I remember this film I have it on DVD. This was during the whole US against the World campaign. There was a period there where it seemed US the U.S.A. was at war with everyone and everyone wanted a piece of us. Not sure if it was the fact that
Ronny Raygun was President or that the national position was if you are not red white and blue you die.

Now not trying to debate aspects of the film, but it wasn’t that the Russian’s got bored. They had a real bad string of farming seasons and it was more driven toward feeding Siberia. Now I am not siding with the Russians don’t get me wrong when my friends and I first saw RED DAWN back in the 80’s. Call it a hunch, call it paranoia we began to stockpile canned goods, just in case. We even had escape plans and several 18 in fact planned routs to get to the hills.

Your reference to Iraqi freedom fighters has a great deal of merit to it. Less we forget when we declared our independence we the 13 colonies were Insurrectionists going against King George.

I also see what you mean about a “Police State”
