Photo Ops in Sudan 1983.

Instead of doing some kind of labor, our group trip to Sudan included meeting Officials. It was sort of disappointing to go to Africa and not contribute in some way to the well being of some African tribe or anything. Instead we did alot of photo ops like this. Plenty of Pepsi around or Tea with about a 1/4 inch of sugar at the bottom. The Sudanese said they needed so much sugar to survive the heat in Sudan. Sudan is very near the Saharan Desert, and I guess the average temperature there was about over 100 farenheit or so during the time I was there.

I think this is a picture near the "Kenana" sugar factory. The Sudanese gave us a tour of the place, took pride in there sugar plant, which they used copious amounts of in there Tea.

A picture of Carmella, toting something across the compound where we where staying. Which was in a University dormitory in Omdurman.

Jumping ahead here, this is a picture of "Ahmed" our faithful driver in Sudan. He liked James Brown music. Although I took this picture of him , one of the things I really regret is not being in contact wiith some of these people we met in Sudan, whom I'm sure would have given a finger to live in the U.S. and in which I might have enriched there lives more. Jessica Warner a member of our group is the girl in the background.

One thing you can say about Africans, and children in Africa is that they are naturally photogenic...though we were warned that many cultures and people in Africa some take exception to having there picture taken. In this case I found that wasn't true. I tried to take a picture like this of some youths in the back of an A/C transit bus in Oakland,Calif and ended up getting beat up. .
